Denttabs is a Berlin-based company: This is where we create our formula, design our products, and operate as a business. Berlin is our home for research and development. For the manufacturing of the tablets, we work with partners who possess the necessary professional and certified expertise. Our tablets are currently produced by us and by a contract manufacturer in Poland and Germany. 

The Mint toothpaste tablets contain:

Microfine cellulose fibers (microcrystalline cellulose): The cellulose fibers in the toothpaste tablets are obtained from woody parts of plants. Naturally FSC-certified and grown in the EU. This is a long-chain polysaccharide that can polish your teeth ultra-smoothly, right into the gaps between your teeth. This is why new particles simply roll off the tooth surfaces. Deposits, also known as plaque, can practically not form in the first place.

Citric Acid: Stimulates saliva flow. The increased saliva flow with natural calcium and phosphate ions causes faster remineralization of the enamel and the tooth.

Sodium Bicarbonate : Also known as baking soda, it reacts with citric acid to adjust the pH of the tablet to a neutral value while brushing your teeth.

Silica : Acts as a gentle cleaning agent.

Amisoft (Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate): A mild and natural surfactant consisting of plant-based fatty acids and the amino acid glutamic acid, which is isolated from plant proteins. When brushing, it helps to bind proteins, fats and carbohydrates with water so that they can be washed out when rinsing.

Natural mint flavor : Together with stevia extract and menthol, it provides a pleasant feeling of freshness in the mouth.

Eugenol : Part of our natural mint flavor. Eugenol is also known as the characteristic flavoring of cloves.

Xanthan Gum : A natural polysaccharide that is also used as a thickening and gelling agent. In the toothpaste tablet, it provides the pleasant creaminess after chewing the tablet.

Stevia (steviosides): A sweet-tasting plant that, together with the aroma and menthol, provides the good taste. Steviosides are not sugar, but proteins that have a characteristic sweet taste. This is why steviosides cannot cause tooth decay.

Sodium fluoride: Serves to remineralize tooth enamel and can be particularly helpful for sensitive teeth, but also for incipient caries.

Magnesium stearate : A herbal excipient necessary for tablet production.

The Strawberry toothpaste tablets contain:

Magnesium stearate : A herbal excipient necessary for tablet production.

Our mint tooth tablets have 12 ingredients, the strawberry tablets have 13. This naturally makes controlling raw material procurement much easier, although the supply chain is complex even with few ingredients if you want to trace it back to its origin. We have fixed suppliers from whom we source the ingredients for our Denttabs. We work with our direct suppliers to understand their work processes as well as their supply chain. We prefer local suppliers from the EU who themselves demonstrate clear social and environmental transparency and enjoy working with us. A transparent supply chain is our major goal. We are currently working hard to be able to tell you, our customers, more about our supply chain and to make it more open. But that will still take a little time.

Once the bag has been opened, denttabs have a shelf life of at least 1 year if stored in a dry place.

Denttabs tooth brushing tablets are certified according to the COSMOS standard and carry the BDIH quality seal with the signature COSMOS NATURAL. The standard governs not only the formula, but also production and packaging. Key requirements:

• Only ingredients from defined categories are permitted – no artificial colors or fragrances, no silicones, no paraffins; petrochemical content is limited to a maximum of 2%
• No raw materials from slaughtered or living animals
• No animal testing during the manufacture, development, or testing of finished products
• No genetically modified organisms
• No nanomaterials and no prohibited processes such as ethoxylation (PEGs)
• Environmentally friendly and resource-saving production
• Packaging: no PVC, no polystyrene or other styrene-based plastics, no polycarbonate; demonstrable fulfillment of several criteria based on the principles of reduce, reuse, renewable, and recycle

Since you spit out the toothpaste tablet after brushing, you can use the tablets without worry. We have also heard from many users that Denttabs works very well for them during pregnancy. This is because the non-foaming toothpaste tablet does not cause nausea while brushing, unlike toothpaste.

Yes, our toothpaste tablets are vegan & gluten-free. And our ingredient Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate should not be confused with the glutamates used as flavor enhancers in the food industry. Denttabs toothpaste tablets are glutamate-free.

Denttabs are the ideal travel companion for short or long trips, spontaneous city breaks, or camping holidays. The tooth cleaning tablets are lightweight and water-free, so you can take them anywhere, and thanks to their natural ingredients, you can spit them out in nature.

Everything contained in denttabs toothpaste tablets is biodegradable. Therefore, it is perfectly fine to use denttabs when camping, for example, and spit them out into nature. You should not do this with conventional toothpaste!

The tablet form means we save a lot of weight and volume, thus reducing CO2 emissions during transport. Our packaging with 125 toothpaste tablets weighs 42g and is therefore significantly lighter than conventional toothpaste, which weighs an average of 75g (since our packaging with 125 toothpaste tablets is equivalent to two conventional toothpaste tubes, it is actually 150g 😉). In addition, our toothpaste tablets are manufactured in the EU, which significantly shortens transport routes. Each bag of toothpaste tablets currently produces only 164.2g of CO2.

Denttabs is the first toothpaste substitute that can be sold unpackaged and saves large amounts of packaging even when minimally packaged. This means that much less CO2 is released during disposal than with conventional toothpaste tubes.

The CO2 emissions generated during transport depend on the type of transport (means of transport, model), the weight of the goods, the size of the goods, the distance and the fuel used.

You can swallow denttabs without fluoride because the ingredients are harmless. For the version with fluoride, we are legally obliged to put a warning on the packaging. This is a precautionary measure to prevent excessive swallowing of fluoride.

Axel founded the dental laboratory proDentum with his brothers in 1992. By chance, he helped Dr. Hendrik Eifler, a dental client, with his doctoral thesis on the development of a waterless toothpaste, inspired by Prof. Peter Gängler. After many attempts, a granulate was created, and later a tablet, which was sold starting in the autumn of 2003. The positive response led to a focus on the product. In 2009, Denttabs was founded as an independent company. Today, the tooth cleaning tablets are available in over 40 countries.

Within the EU, it is not permitted to test cosmetic products and their ingredients or packaging materials on animals, or to import and sell such cosmetic products. Based on this, and out of our personal conviction, Denttabs products are not tested on animals!

We avoid all questionable ingredients, including titanium dioxide or artificial colors. Our tablet consists of approximately 70% cellulose. This is white by nature, and therefore, so is our tablet.

Do you want to reduce some of the intensity? -> Leave the tablets open for a few days and place them in a warm spot. This allows the menthol to escape and the intensity to be mellowed.

Of course! You can use our tooth cleaning tablets too. When brushing for the first time, your saliva might not have its usual light color when you spit, but might be a bit darker. This is due to plaque being polished off from the wires and brackets.

We recommend brushing twice in a row the first time. By the second time, your saliva will be much lighter when you spit. A major advantage of brushing with tooth cleaning tablets is that the area where the bracket meets the tooth is polished, which helps prevent the formation of plaque and tartar. Our ultra-soft toothbrush with its thin, rounded bristles also helps with this.

Yes! Our toothpaste tablets are suitable for natural teeth and dental prostheses – including crowns, bridges, and inlays. Even removable dentures can be polished on the visible surfaces. Thorough, plaque-free care is especially important for those with implants. Regular dental visits help prevent inflammation.

We recommend one tablet each morning and evening. For fresh breath in between, simply chew one tablet and rinse your mouth with water.

Brushing with Denttabs is unusual, but simple:

1. Chew the tablet – preferably on your molars, until a creamy consistency forms (no foam).
2. Brush your teeth – clean as usual with a moistened toothbrush.
3. Rinse your mouth – and enjoy the smooth, polished feeling!

Yes! Our strawberry-flavored denttabs in particular were developed especially for children and are menthol-free. To prevent excessive swallowing, we recommend that children under the age of 6 only brush their teeth under supervision. 

To ensure that children do not swallow the toothpaste tablets, we recommend placing the tablet on a damp toothbrush before brushing and letting it soften for about 30 seconds. Once the tablet is soft, brushing can begin without concern. For children under 6 years of age, we recommend that brushing only be performed under supervision.

We have two versions for children: one with fluoride and one without fluoride. The version without fluoride can be swallowed by children without concern. For the version with fluoride, we are legally required to include a warning on the packaging. This is a precautionary measure to ensure that fluoride is not swallowed in excessive amounts.

Denttabs tooth cleaning tablets are scientifically tested:

🔬 Fluoride availability: The special tablet form ensures better distribution of fluoride in the mouth than toothpaste.

🦷 Remineralization: The fluoride dissolves quickly in saliva and supports the repair of damaged areas of the teeth.

✨ Plaque removal: A study showed a clear reduction in plaque after 14–21 days.

📉 Abrasivity: Despite low abrasion, Denttabs remove plaque just as well as, or better than, conventional toothpaste.

The Cosmetics Regulation sets a limit of 1500 ppm for the total amount of fluoride in toothpaste to ensure sufficient effectiveness against cavities. With 1450 ppm, Denttabs hits the mark perfectly. This has already been confirmed in several test results, such as those by consumer organizations in the Netherlands, Denmark, France, and Belgium, and underscored by laboratory analyses.

Our strawberry-flavored toothpaste tablets are within the standard range for children at 500 ppm. 500 ppm is a guideline value that is recommended and internationally recognized.

In general, fluoride protects against tooth decay. Especially people with sensitive teeth / tooth decay report positive experiences with our fluoride tablets.

We use sodium fluoride for Denttabs toothpaste tablets. Sodium fluoride can be harmful in large quantities and toxic in excessive doses. This would only be noticeable at a quantity of 350 mg or more. Don't worry: with 0.48 mg per tablet in the mint version for adults, you don't need to worry about Denttabs toothpaste tablets. The amount of sodium fluoride is completely harmless.

Fluoride-free toothpaste tablets are suitable for babies and toddlers who do not reliably spit out after brushing their teeth. If the little ones are given fluoride tablets as a substitute, the use of fluoride-free dental care for children is recommended.   

Skepticism regarding fluoride tablets is based on a misunderstanding: Many are not aware that the fluoride used in toothpastes is not the highly toxic and gaseous fluorine, but the salt sodium fluoride. This occurs in many minerals in nature and is added to toothpastes as well as, for example, table salt.  

At this point, we would like to emphasize again that fluoride alone is not sufficient for healthy oral hygiene. A healthy diet with little sugar supports dental health and ensures healthy oral hygiene.

Short version:  

Simply put: Fluoride forms a kind of protective film around your teeth and protects them from cavities. To better understand how fluoride works, it helps to understand how cavities form in the first place:   

Our teeth consist of tooth enamel, dentin, and dental cementum. The enamel is the hardest substance in the human body and is composed primarily of calcium and phosphate. Our teeth are surrounded by a biofilm (plaque) that contains numerous microorganisms. These bacteria break down carbohydrates from food into acids. These acids damage the tooth because they dissolve calcium and phosphate out of the enamel, causing it to soften. Fluoride counteracts this. It improves the remineralization of teeth by helping to incorporate minerals back into the tooth structure. In addition, it strengthens the enamel and makes it more resistant to acids. This allows the enamel to regain an intact surface. 

The cellulose in Denttabs toothpaste tablets, together with our bamboo toothbrush with its extremely thin and tapered filaments, polishes your teeth smooth, right down to the gaps between them. If you also use dental floss or an interdental brush, you are optimally equipped.

Typical commercial toothpastes have an RDA of 50-70. The abrasion value (RDA) of Denttabs is only 21, which means very low abrasivity. Silica and the gentle surfactant sodium lauroyl glutamate help keep abrasion low while simultaneously reducing foaming.

Despite the low abrasion value, a clinically controlled study shows that Denttabs offers cleaning performance that is just as good as, or even better than, other toothpastes. In a comparison of three different dentifrices (a whitening toothpaste with an RDA value of 162, a tooth gel with an RDA of 0, and Denttabs with an RDA of 35), the cleaning performance of Denttabs was 54.4%, which was the highest performance of the three. The study refutes the myth that only highly abrasive agents can effectively remove plaque.

The Denttabs packaging consists of 45% paper and 55% of an inner 'bio' film. This 'bio' film is in turn composed of a polymer layer consisting of 63% polylactide (PLA based on corn starch) and 37% of the polymer PBAT. The remainder of the packaging consists of the adhesive (5%) and a ceramic water vapor barrier (<1%).

Both PLA and PBAT are biodegradable and industrially compostable. This means that the packaging has been proven to decompose under specific conditions (temperature, humidity, and oxygen supply). The Denttabs packaging is therefore also certified for industrial composting, meaning that it is proven to break down by 90% in industrial compost within 90 days under the required composting conditions.

Unfortunately, industrially compostable does not mean that the packaging can go in the organic waste bin. We ask you to put the Denttabs packaging in the yellow recycling bin so that it is disposed of correctly. Currently, it is unfortunately still being incinerated in the yellow bin. We see the potential in the disposal route via the yellow bin to recycle or compost it in a controlled manner depending on the material in the future.

In addition, we are currently working on home-compostable packaging.

Our packaging containing 125 toothpaste tablets weighs 42 grams and is designed for two months of brushing. Compared to a standard 150 ml tube of toothpaste for two months, we weigh 70% less, thereby saving CO2 during transport.  

Industrially compostable does not mean that the packaging should go into the organic waste bin. The German disposal system is not yet prepared for this. In the meantime, we ask you to put Denttabs packaging into the yellow recycling bin so that it is disposed of properly. For now, it is still mostly incinerated. However, we see the yellow bin disposal route as having at least the potential for future recycling or controlled composting, depending on the material.  

In parallel, we are working on home-compostable packaging, which you will then be able to compost in your own garden in the future. 

You currently cannot put our packaging in your home compost. However, we are currently working on developing garden-compostable packaging for you. In the meantime, please dispose of the Denttabs packaging in the yellow bin so that it is disposed of properly.  

First of all: Please don't do that. Our packaging is industrially compostable, but it is not marine-degradable—at least not quickly enough. According to the German Environment Agency, it would take PLA over 1.5 years to degrade in the ocean. There is (at least for now) no bio-based plastic that can degrade in the ocean fast enough to avoid causing significant damage and marine pollution.

To ensure long-lasting freshness of Denttabs, you should transfer them to an airtight container for storage after opening. 

Basically, any toothbrush will do. The softer, the better the polishing effect. Therefore, we recommend an ultra-soft toothbrush, such as our BambuuBrush.

If you would like to brush your teeth with your electric toothbrush and Denttabs, you don't need to worry. Polishing is about creating the smoothest surface possible. Your teeth are polished to a high shine by the soft bristles of our Denttabs BambuuBrush. On polished surfaces, new particles simply bead off the tooth enamel. Plaque deposits practically cannot even form in the first place.

In general, a toothbrush should be replaced every 2-3 months. The most important reason for changing it: bacterial growth. We have heard from some people that they wash their toothbrushes in the dishwasher to kill germs.

The bacteria from your oral cavity also settle on your toothbrush. Therefore, it is important to clean your toothbrush regularly under running water. If necessary, the toothbrush can be washed in the dishwasher or cleaned with water hotter than 60 degrees. 

Thanks to its antibacterial and odor-resistant properties, bamboo is perfectly suited for oral care. In addition, bamboo is one of the fastest-growing plants in the world and is biodegradable. Giant bamboo, for example, grows up to 20 meters tall within a few months. Furthermore, the material is very durable and requires no pesticides or fertilizers.

With a consumption of 4 toothbrushes per year, we end up with 332 million toothbrushes in Germany alone that are thrown in the trash annually. The consumption of plastic in Germany continues to rise, and over 60% of plastic waste is not recycled, but incinerated for energy recovery. Except for the bristles, the bamboo toothbrush is biodegradable, so you can dispose of it in your organic waste bin or on the compost heap after removing the bristles.

Furthermore, bamboo toothbrushes have a better environmental footprint than plastic toothbrushes. This is shown, for example, by a 2020 study that compares various toothbrushes. The entire life cycle (even including water consumption while brushing teeth) was taken into account. 20 bamboo toothbrushes (i.e., 5 years of brushing) emit 4.22 kg of CO2 equivalents. 20 plastic toothbrushes emit 25.6 kg of CO2 equivalents, which is 6x more than with the bamboo toothbrush. The bamboo toothbrush performs the best among the toothbrushes tested in the study.

Our Denttabs BambuuBrush consists of a bamboo handle made from Chinese bamboo, ultra-fine bristles made of PBT (polybutylene terephthalate), and a metal staple that holds the bristles together in the head.  

Our Denttabs BambuuBrush comes from the manufacturer @BambuuBrush Ltd. and is manufactured in China.

Transporting bamboo to Europe generates large amounts of harmful greenhouse gases. Ultimately, we must wait and see how this still-small market develops. Nevertheless, due to its extremely rapid growth and high CO2 storage capacity, bamboo is fundamentally more sustainable than the wood of most trees. 

Our ultra-fine bristles, combined with Denttabs, ensure an especially smooth tooth surface. On smooth or polished surfaces, new particles simply bead off the teeth. Deposits, also known as plaque, can practically never even form.

Furthermore, you are also protecting your gums and preventing gum injuries.

Our activated charcoal-infused bristles are made of PBT (polybutylene terephthalate), a plastic that is particularly flexible and dimensionally stable.

For a pleasant brushing experience, we recommend moistening the toothbrush. 

After you have removed the bristles of our BambuuBrush with pliers or snapped off the head, you can throw it onto your compost pile or into the organic waste bin. The bristles (or the head) can be disposed of in the recycling bin.

We find it very unfortunate that the German Ökotest did not recognize our studies. These substantiate both the fluoride efficacy and the remineralization of the toothpaste tablets. All studies and laboratory tests have been provided to Ökotest. We remain open to further discussions and constructive exchange in the future. 

Stiftung Warentest does not rely on the existing in vitro studies or laboratory tests of Denttabs. Numerous laboratory tests conducted by the University of Witten/Herdecke have proven that Denttabs with 1450 ppm provide a sufficient fluoride effect under optimal conditions. This has now also been confirmed by four other European consumer organizations.
