Statutory health insurance companies pay around €4 billion annually for dentures ( see here ). Private health insurers pay around €3 billion ( see here ). And that's just for dentures like crowns, bridges, and implants.
In total, that’s 7 billion euros for treatment instead of prevention.
The reason for expensive dentures
Caries is almost always the cause. This is caused by bacteria that convert plaque, particularly sugar, but also white flour and alcohol, into lactic acid.
By brushing our teeth, we try to combat this and remove this plaque. But what if we prevented it from forming in the first place?
Denttabs: Preventing tooth decay
The secret is a smooth tooth surface. Virtually nothing sticks to smooth surfaces. This is where Denttabs toothpaste tablets come into play: They polish teeth visibly smooth (Tip: Especially when combined with our ultra-soft bamboo toothbrush ) (Explained in more detail in this article: here ). This isn't a vision of the future, but rather prevention that's already being practiced.
The reality: Our system rewards repair, not prevention
That sounds easy. And it is practical. However, the current reality is different.
-
Billions are invested in dentures – but hardly anything in prevention
-
Health insurance companies cover the costs of repairs, but not of innovative measures to prevent caries
-
Health debates revolve around costs and reforms - not effective dental prophylaxis
For example, a crown under standard care—that is, a full metal crown in the posterior region without veneer—can cost a total of €365.96 . Statutory health insurance contributes a fixed subsidy:
-
Without bonus this is 219.58 euros ,
-
with a maximum bonus of 274.47 euros .
For the patient this means a personal contribution of
-
146.38 euros without bonus ,
-
or 91.49 euros with the maximum bonus . (-> More information here )
A simple calculation: What does real caries prevention cost?
Prevention does not cost billions of euros and starts with small things – for example, “pill instead of paste”.
Currently, the cost of dentures is around €7 billion (plus administrative and treatment costs, etc.). Not to mention the costs of toothache, incapacity to work, and possible complications...
If everyone who still uses toothpaste were supplied with Denttabs today, it would cost a comparatively paltry €1.44 billion. (480 million tubes -> 240 million bags of Denttabs at €6 each)
And psst: With that quantity, there would definitely be a decent discount!
We should seriously start rethinking the system. And not just from a cost perspective.
