Brushing your teeth - toothpaste tablets instead of toothpaste

Have you ever brushed your teeth with toothpaste tablets ? Or do you need more information about why you should look beyond the tube? If so, you've come to the right place!

In this article, you will find out what distinguishes tabs from conventional toothpaste and what advantages they bring to your oral hygiene. Before that, you can briefly delve into the history of Denttabs, the pioneers and originals among toothpaste tablets.

A dental care product without water and still as effective as toothpaste?

Is that possible? Like many great discoveries and inventions, the history of Denttabs toothpaste tablets is based on a chain of different circumstances.

The Denttabs story goes like this:

A In 1998, a dentist was asked to find out in his doctoral thesis whether it was possible to produce a dental care product without water that cleans as well as a normal toothpaste. The future founder of Denttabs, Axel Kaiser, heard about it and took on the matter by actively supporting the doctoral thesis in practical terms. End of story! Almost. Because the result was a granulate that was in no way inferior to a classic toothpaste in terms of its care effect. Nevertheless, it took another five years of development work before the first Denttabs for brushing teeth went on sale in 2003. The official founding of "Denttabs innovative Zahnpflegegesellschaft mbH" took place in 2009. Since 2019, the Denttabs toothpaste tabs have also been available in environmentally friendly plastic-free packaging.

What is the difference between toothpaste tablets and toothpaste?

The most important difference is that toothbrush tabs contain a minimum of ingredients. Conventional toothpaste not only contains significantly more, but also contains chemicals that are considered to be extremely harmful - even if they are initially considered harmless to the body in small doses .

Conventional toothpaste contains up to 50% water

Accordingly, a tube of toothpaste contains a lot of preservatives. This prevents the formation of mold, etc. Denttabs toothpaste tablets, on the other hand, consist of 0% water and around 70 % small, finely ground cellulose fibers. These ensure that the teeth are not only cleaned when brushing, but also polished in a way that is gentle on the teeth.

What Denttabs toothpaste tablets do NOT contain, unlike toothpaste:

  • preservatives
  • parabens
  • aluminum
  • bleach and artificial colors
  • questionable surfactants for foam generation
  • petroleum -based polyethylene glycols (PEGs)
  • titanium dioxide

Da Denttabs are produced without water, the use of the additives listed above is not necessary, because they do not represent any Advantages. The production of PEGs, parabens & Co is also known to be not particularly environmentally friendly and resource-saving .

No foam at the mouth? Denttabs chewable tablets contain only a few surfactants because:

The foam that is created when brushing your teeth with toothpaste due to the use of surfactants that are usually too aggressive does not, as is often assumed, provide a better cleaning effect or oral hygiene. Rather, the formation of foam when brushing your teeth is supposed to create a positive feeling of "particular cleanliness". Some surfactants are suspected of having an adverse effect on the oral mucosa. In this respect, the widely used surfactant sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is particularly controversial.

Another disadvantage of surfactants is their irritating effect on the oral mucosa. This can be noticed, for example, by a spongy gum structure or an increased formation of aphthous ulcers in the mouth.

Since our tabs do not contain any aggressive surfactants, the development of foam is naturally reduced. But don't worry: your teeth will be super smooth and clean without much foaming .

All advantages of Denttabs at a glance:

  • microplastic-free
  • Natural and vegan ingredients
  • Certified natural cosmetics
  • Available with and without fluoride
  • environmentally and resource-friendly production
  • Practical and easy to carry
  • compostable packaging

Quote: “In contrast to conventional toothpaste, Denttabs toothpaste tablets do not contain any aggressive abrasives.”

What Abrasives Do in Conventional Toothpastes

First and foremost, the abrasives are intended for clean Teeth. However, they have an abrasive effect. This means that sooner or later the tooth enamel can be attacked. Subsequently, abrasive particles can also be responsible for exposed tooth necks. Small cracks or gaps in the tooth enamel are the most common reasons why teeth react sensitively to cold, heat or acid stimuli. Denttabs tooth tablets gently polish your teeth without attacking the tooth enamel.

Are toothpaste tablets as good for your teeth as toothpaste?

Our tooth brushing tabs are not only produced in a way that conserves resources and protects the climate and uses a minimum of ingredients, but are also a better option than conventional toothpastes when it comes to dental health: the natural cellulose fibers ensure smooth tooth surfaces without attacking the tooth enamel. This means that bacteria and tartar have little "surface area" to settle permanently.

13 clinical studies and 6 laboratory reports confirm the effectiveness of Denttabs

Due to the numerous tests, Denttabs toothpaste tablets are among the most thoroughly tested dental hygiene products ever. You can read more about the test results of our toothpaste tablets here .

How do you use Denttabs tablets correctly?

They are very easy to use: Each time you brush your teeth, take 1 tablet in your mouth and chew it . By mixing it with saliva, a fine consistency is created, which you pick up with your toothbrush and 'brush' your teeth as usual. Then just rinse with water and you're done! The first few uses may seem a little unusual due to the consistency. This is completely normal because, as mentioned, our toothpaste tablets do not contain any foaming surfactants.

Are fluorides necessary in toothpaste tablets?

As part of caries prevention, the German Society for Preventive Dentistry (DGPZM) recommends brushing your teeth twice a day with a fluoride-containing dental care product in order to remove the bacterial biofilm as completely as possible. The Cosmetics Regulation sets a limit of 1500 parts per million (ppm) of fluoride content in toothpaste. Our Mint Tabs therefore contain an optimal value of 1450 ppm fluoride .

Which toothbrush is best suited for toothpaste tablets?

Whether you use an electric toothbrush or a manual toothbrush, it is generally better for your teeth and gums to use a toothbrush with soft bristles. If you also want to do something for the environment, we can recommend our environmentally friendly toothbrushes made of bamboo wood and with particularly soft bristles .

Bamboo is not only biodegradable, but is also one of the fastest growing plants in the world. Due to its antibacterial and odor-resistant properties, bamboo wood is ideal for dental care. The soft and fine bristles of our bamboo toothbrushes, in combination with our tabs, ensure particularly smooth and clean teeth.

Conclusion: Brushing your teeth with toothpaste tablets – an alternative to toothpaste?

Quote: They are just small tablets, but they have the potential to turn an entire industry upside down .”
(Prof. Dr. Michael Braungar d – Jury member of the German Sustainability Award Foundation)

Toothpaste tabs are an environmentally friendly and tooth-friendly alternative to toothpaste . Despite the minimal amount of ingredients, toothpaste tablets are in no way inferior to conventional toothpastes in terms of cleaning and cleansing effect. Toothpaste tabs also contain sufficient fluoride to be effective against tooth decay when it comes to caries prevention. Another great advantage of our tabs is that the teeth are not only cleaned when brushing, but are also be polished at the same time.

If you also want to do something good for the environment and accumulate less plastic waste: The packaging of our climate-neutrally produced toothpaste tablets has been industrially compostable since 2019 and is based on a corn-based bioplastic. Many good reasons why the Denttabs toothpaste tablets were awarded the German Sustainability Award in 2021.

Speaking of packaging: Don’t miss our next blog post!

In it, we report on the plastic waste problem in the particular context of the production and disposal of toothpaste tubes: In Germany alone, around 500 million non-recyclable toothpaste tubes end up in the trash every year.
